The Last of the Clan McDuck
The Last of the Clan McDuck
The Last of the Clan McDuck is a 1992 Scrooge McDuck comic by Don Rosa. It is the first chapter of The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck and shows Scrooge as a boy in Glasgow, Scotland, from 1877 to 1880. He fights with the Whiskervilles, earns his Number One Dime, and heads to the United States on a cattle boat. This story also marks the first appearance of Scrooge’s mother, Downy O'Drake, and the first appearance of Uncle Jake McDuck, who was mentioned before.
Publication: It first appeared in the Danish magazine Anders And & Co. in 1992; the first American publication was Uncle Scrooge #285 in April 1994.
Plot: Scrooge grows up in a poor family and clashes with the Whiskervilles. His first job is shining shoes; his first customer gives him filthy boots but pays with an American dime. Angry at being cheated, Scrooge vows to be fair and square in business and becomes smarter and more ambitious, earning money by selling firewood and peat moss.
A family legend says the McDucks once owned a castle and a great fortune. An ancestor named Quackly McDuck hid the treasure in the castle and accidentally sealed himself behind a wall. The Whiskervilles spread a “phantom hound” to scare the McDucks away so they could steal the treasure, and the castle fell into ruin.
Exploring the castle, Scrooge learns the hound was a trick. A keeper helps him, and Scrooge decides to go to America to earn his fortune. The keeper later reveals himself as Quackly McDuck, the ghost of the ancestor sealed in the wall, who explains that Scrooge must earn his fortune himself.
Motivated, Scrooge leaves for America to seek his fortune.
