The Last Breath, also known as Escape from the Deep, is a 2024 survival horror thriller directed by Joachim Hedén. The story follows a group of old college friends who reunite for a Caribbean scuba diving trip to explore the wreck of a WWII battleship. Beneath the surface they discover they’re not alone and become trapped in a dangerous underwater maze with threats all around, including great white sharks.

Cast includes Kim Spearman, Jack Parr, Erin Mullen, Arlo Carter, and Alexander Arnold. The screenplay is by Andrew Prendergast and Nick Saltrese. It was produced by Andrew Prendergast and Chris Reed, with cinematography by Eric Börjeson, editing by Fredrik Morheden and Albin Simonsson, and music by Patrick Kirst.

The Last Breath was released in theaters on June 12, 2024, and arrived on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD in July 2024. The film runs 96 minutes and is in English. It grossed about $528,804 at the box office.

Critical reception was largely negative. Rotten Tomatoes reports about 30% positive from 27 critics (average 4.8/10). Notable takes include Glenn Kenny of RogerEbert.com giving it 2 out of 4 stars, Derek Sante of KSNV calling it a simplistic film, and Noah Berlatsky of Chicago Reader acknowledging it isn’t great art but finding some satisfying blunt justice.

Filming took place starting September 2022 in Belgium (AED Studios in Antwerp) and then in Malta. The production involved multiple companies and was supported by funding bodies including the UK Global Screen Fund.
