Ana Novac was a Romanian-born writer who lived from June 21, 1924 (or 1929) to March 31, 2010. She was born Zimra Harsányi in Dej, in northern Transylvania, and grew up in Oradea. She attended a Jewish school in Miskolc, Hungary. In 1944, when Nazi control reached Hungary, she was sent to Auschwitz and later spent time in Kraków-Płaszów and other camps. She kept a journal during her time in the camps and was liberated in May 1945 in Chrastava, Czechoslovakia, but her parents and younger brother did not survive. After returning to Romania, she eventually moved to Berlin in the mid-1960s and then settled in Paris. Her wartime journal was published as a book and translated into several languages, including English as The Beautiful Days of My Youth (1997). She also published other books and plays and died in Paris.
