Australia took part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 as a special guest, the first time the country competed. The European Broadcasting Union invited SBS to participate to celebrate the contest’s 60th anniversary. SBS internally chose Guy Sebastian to represent Australia with the song Tonight Again, written by Guy Sebastian, David Ryan Harris, and Louis Schoorl. The entry was announced on 3 March 2015, and the song premiered on 16 March 2015.

Because of its special guest status, Australia went straight to the final. In the final (23 May 2015), Australia performed 12th and finished in 5th place with 196 points. Austria and Sweden each gave Australia 12 points. The stage show featured Sebastian in a suit with four backing singers and several tall lamp-post props that released pyrotechnics, set against a night-city backdrop.

The final was broadcast in Australia on SBS One with Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang as commentators, and Lee Lin Chin announced the Australian votes. The event helped pave the way for Australia’s future participation, and SBS was invited again to compete in 2016.
