The House Without a Christmas Tree is a 1972 American TV movie about Addie Mills, a bright 10-year-old girl who lives with her widowed father, James Mills, and his mother, Addie’s grandmother Sarah, in Clear River, Nebraska. Addie’s mother died soon after she was born, and her father has never recovered. He won’t allow a Christmas tree in the house.

Plot in simple terms:
- Addie longs for a Christmas tree. She even wins a class contest for a tree by using a trick she learned from her father.
- James gets angry when Addie brings the tree home and orders it removed, accusing her of cheating.
- Grandmother Sarah defends Addie, and James threatens to take Addie away if she doesn’t stop.
- That night, Addie secretly donates the tree to Gloria Cott, a classmate who also can’t afford a tree. The next morning, James sees Gloria’s tree and realizes Addie’s kindness.
- He brings home a real tree and ornaments, but he can’t find a star. He goes to the attic, brings down a beautiful star his wife had made for Addie’s first Christmas, and places it on the tree with Addie.
- An adult Addie narrates that over the years her grandmother dies, she moves to a big city, but returns every Christmas to spend time with James, who always has a tree waiting and the star in place.
