Sammohanam (1994 film)
Sammohanam is a 1994 Malayalam-language film directed by C. P. Padmakumar, starring Murali, Nedumudi Venu, and Archana. It is adapted from Balakrishnan Mangad’s story Rithubhedangal and was made on a modest budget as a non-commercial project. Ilaiyaraaja composed the music without charging a fee because he believed in the story, and he later won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Background Music. The film was selected for the Best of the Fest category at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 1995.
The story follows a mysteriously seductive girl named Pennu who comes to a quiet village to search for her missing grandfather, Karuvan Valyachan. Her arrival unsettles the men and disrupts marriages and old friendships. Chandu, a rich farmer, falls for her and leaves his wife Jaanu. Pennu then attracts Chindan, a jaggery mill owner and Chandu’s friend; Chandu attacks Chindan with a sickle and injures him. Ummini, a traveling seller and Pennu’s grandfather’s old acquaintance, also becomes enchanted by her. Ambu, Chandu’s younger helper, harbors a secret love for Pennu, and during a confrontation, Chandu fatally wounds Ambu by accident. Grief-stricken, Chandu commits suicide by jumping into a waterfall. Pennu finally leaves the village, torches her house, and the community is left fractured.
