The Game Awards 2018
The Game Awards 2018 was a celebration of the best video games of 2018. It took place on December 6, 2018, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and was produced and hosted by Geoff Keighley. The show was streamed on more than 45 platforms worldwide and reached audiences in China on over 15 services.
God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 led with eight nominations each—the most in the ceremony’s history at that time. Red Dead Redemption 2 won the most awards, taking four, while God of War won Game of the Year.
Other winners included Celeste and Fortnite, each with two awards. Publisher wins were led by Rockstar Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, tied at four wins each.
New game reveals during the ceremony included Far Cry New Dawn, Hades, The Outer Worlds, and the Mortal Kombat 11 reveal. The Last Night was pulled from the show due to a publisher dispute.
The event opened with a joint speech from Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aimé, PlayStation’s Shawn Layden, and Xbox’s Phil Spencer, symbolizing industry unity. The show featured musical performances and was praised for its exciting announcements, though some critics felt it focused more on trailers than awards.
Viewership was strong, with 26.2 million streams—the most in the ceremony’s history—and a peak of more than 4 million concurrent viewers.
