The Fundamental Component is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Byzantine. It was released on February 10, 2004, after being recorded in 2003. The 52-minute groove metal album was released on Prosthetic Records and produced by Aaron Fisher and Byzantine. In Byzantine's discography, it follows Broadmoor (2003) and precedes ...And They Shall Take Up Serpents (2005).

Reception:
AllMusic said the standout tracks feature progressive and exploratory melodies, while the rest suffers from too much tinkering and a split between metal subgenres. Lambgoat praised the album's mix of influences, highlighting the groove and hard-hitting guitars, and commended the vocal variety across styles, concluding that “any fan of heavy metal should love this album, because there is something for everyone.” Exclaim! appreciated the instrumental variety but criticized OJ's singing as “atrociously meager,” making some pieces hard to enjoy despite the album's overall interest.
