The Four Esquires
The Four Esquires were an American vocal quartet from Boston, Massachusetts. The four members were four students at Boston University. In March 1956, London Records signed them. Their version of Look Homeward Angel was well known, but it didn’t chart because Johnnie Ray released the same song at the same time.
They had two hit singles in the late 1950s, both on Paris Records. The first was Love Me Forever, with orchestral backing by Sid Bass and Rosemary June as a female session vocalist. It reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1957 and No. 23 in the UK. In the US, Eydie Gormé’s cover charted higher, while in the UK Marion Ryan’s version outsold it.
The second hit was Hideaway, with orchestral accompaniment by Richard Hayman, peaking at No. 21 in the US in 1958. In 1963, the group recorded a vocal cover of the James Bond Theme. They disbanded shortly afterward.
