The Dead Stay Young
The Dead Stay Young (Die Toten Bleiben Jung) is a 1949 novel by German author Anna Seghers. It follows a group of people connected by a political crime at the end of World War I. The story shows the lives of the criminals and the lover of the victim, a young communist, and their children. Through their stories, Seghers paints a broad picture of German society during the Weimar Republic and the years of the Nazi regime. The novel ends in the final days of World War II. Seghers aims to describe the full range of Germans in those years, from secretly working communists to Wehrmacht officers, and from cities to villages. Her sympathies are with those who resist the Nazi government.
