The Atheist Experience is an American live, weekly webcast from Austin, Texas. It features discussions about the existence of God and related topics, with callers asked to explain and defend their beliefs. The show often gives priority to theists in order to encourage them to question their views, and to help listeners understand what atheists actually think.

Origin and history
The Atheist Experience grew out of the Austin-based Atheist Community of Austin (ACA), formed in 1996. The first pilot episode aired on October 19, 1997. After that, episodes were broadcast live on cable access TV every other Sunday. The show was originally about 30 minutes long, then expanded to an hour in September 1998. Beginning in December 1999, it was streamed online, and since November 2005, it has also been distributed as a podcast. A YouTube channel became the official channel in August 2012 and has since built a large audience.

Milestones and locations
The 1000th episode aired on June 24, 2018. The pilot was recorded at Furr’s Cafeteria; later episodes were filmed at the Austin Public studio. In October 2015, production moved to the ACA’s Freethought Library due to technical issues at the public access studio.

Format, goals, and topics
The show centers on discussions or debates about the existence of gods, aimed primarily at a non-atheist audience. The format typically has a host and co-host replying to live calls, which are screened before connecting with the hosts. Callers are placed in a queue, and the host can place them on hold or disconnect disruptive participants. While debates can be heated, the best conversations are respectful and informative. The program often focuses on Christianity due to its influence in the United States, covering topics like religious dogma, morality, ethics, and the scientific method. Occasionally, scientists or scholars join as guests to share insights.

Music and culture
The opening theme has changed over the years. A previous theme was “Listen to Reason” (2009–2015); the current opening music includes Shelley Segal’s “Saved.”

Spin-offs and related shows
The Atheist Experience has inspired several spin-offs produced by the ACA, including The Non-Prophets Radio podcast, Talk Heathen, Godless Bitches, The Preaching Humanist, and Secular Sexuality. Later additions included SkepTalk, The Line, and The Line Edge.

Guest participation and notable changes
From time to time, notable guests join as co-hosts or participate in discussions. In December 2018, several hosts left the show after disagreements with ACA leadership over how a controversial guest host was handled regarding a video about trans women athletes.

Overall
The Atheist Experience aims to present atheism clearly to a broad audience, showcase arguments and debate techniques, and encourage viewers to think critically about religious beliefs, especially Christianity, while keeping the conversation accessible and engaging.
