Anax amazili
Anax amazili, the Amazon darner, is a tropical dragonfly in the Aeshnidae family. It ranges from the southern United States down to Argentina and is commonly found near open ponds and marshes, including temporary wetlands. It is a fairly large dragonfly, about 70–74 mm long, with hindwings around 48–52 mm.
The face is green with a single dark triangle on the top of the frons. The abdomen is mostly brown, but the first two segments are green like the thorax. There are large basal spots, blue to green depending on the individual, giving the abdomen a ringed appearance.
Conservation status: Least Concern.
Taxonomy: Kingdom Animalia; Phylum Arthropoda; Class Insecta; Order Odonata; Infraorder Anisoptera; Family Aeshnidae; Genus Anax; Species A. amazili. Binomial name Anax amazili (Burmeister, 1839). Synonyms include Aeschna amazili and Anax maculatus.
