María de la Soledad Loaeza Tovar, known as Soledad Loaeza, was born on April 29, 1950, in Mexico City. She is a Mexican academic who studies how democracy grows in Mexico and how Mexican society changes.

Education and early work
- She earned a degree in international relations from El Colegio de México in 1972, writing about Charles de Gaulle’s foreign policy.
- She studied in Munich and Paris and earned a PhD in political science with a focus on how middle classes, democracy, and nationalism interact in Mexico.
