Orange-rimmed Satin Moth (Thalaina selenaea) is a moth in the Geometridae family. It was first described by Henry Doubleday in 1845 and now lives in eastern Australia, including Tasmania. The common name Satin Moth is also used for another species in Europe and Asia, so the name can be confusing. The wingspan is about 5 cm. The wings are mainly white with a rusty brown edge on the front margin; some southern moths have a rust-colored diagonal stripe on each forewing. On the underside of each hindwing there is a brown and orange spot, which may be visible from above. The caterpillars are light green with long sparse black hairs and a red spot behind the head, growing up to 4 cm. They lack the wavy outline and rings of the similar Thalaina clara. The pupa is dark green with a brown abdomen at first, then turns fully brown. This moth ranges across much of southeastern Australia, from Tasmania to central Queensland. Adults are most commonly seen in spring, especially April. The caterpillars feed on silver wattle (Acacia dealbata) and Australian blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon).
