Texas Junior Golf Tour
The Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) is a Texas-based tour that helps junior players, ages 12–18, get ready for national competitions and pursue college golf scholarships. It also runs smaller programs for younger and older players: the Elite Mini Tour for ages 8–12 and the Texas Collegiate Amateur Tour (TCAT) for ages 19–25.
TJGT began in Austin in 1989 when parents and coaches wanted more fall and winter competition to supplement the high school golf season. Today the tour offers about 85 competitive tournaments each year across Texas.
TJGT is connected with the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). TJGT events can lead to AJGA performance-based entry, and TJGT tournaments are ranked by AJGA, Golfweek, and Junior Golf Scoreboard. Members come from all over the United States and from other countries, including Mexico, Scotland, Venezuela, Ecuador, Canada, and Korea.
A select board of former college coaches and parents makes many decisions, including finances, endorsements, and where events are held. Endorsements include Titleist, Oakley, Supreme Golf, Galleria Dallas, and the Texas Association of Golf Coaches.
TJGT uses a points system. The top 15 finishers earn points based on their finish and the tournament’s level (regular, major, or invitational). At the end of the year, the top point leaders play in a Tournament of Champions. The points determine the Player of the Year and the All-Tour Team, which helps players catch the eye of college coaches. Some TJGT players go on to the PGA or LPGA; notable pros include Jhonattan Vegas and Stacy Lewis. Bronson Burgoon is a notable college player who helped Texas A&M win the NCAA Division I Championship.
TJGT runs high-level tournaments year-round throughout Texas, with many events near Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio, plus other areas. The tour has grown from 8 tournaments to 85 per year. The schedule includes 5 elite invitational events and 11 major tournaments. Venues have included Barton Creek Resort, Horseshoe Bay, TPC Las Colinas, The Woodlands Country Club, the University of Texas Golf Club, and the Traditions Club at Texas A&M, among others.
TJGT provides strong exposure to college coaches across the country. More than 3,300 TJGT graduates have gone on to play college golf, with signees ranging from top NCAA programs to NAIA and JUCO schools.
AJGA remains the most competitive national tour, with several Texas events and famous alumni. Within Texas, the Texas Legends Junior Tour (TLJT) is another strong option, offering about 12 events and hosting major events like the HP Byron Nelson Junior Championship, the Texas Cup Invitational, and the Texas State Junior Championship.
