Tenerife Tram
Tenerife Tram is a light rail system on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. It is run by Metropolitano de Tenerife, a company fully owned by the Cabildo of Tenerife.
The network has two lines and 27 stations, covering about 15.1 km of track. The trains run on standard gauge (1,435 mm) and use 750 V DC overhead power.
Line 1 runs from Intercambiador in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Avenida de la Trinidad in La Laguna, with 21 stops over 12.5 km. Line 2 opened in 2009 and goes from La Cuesta to Tíncer, sharing some stops with Line 1. The two lines connect, forming an integrated transport system with the island’s bus network TITSA, and fares are the same on buses and trams.
Ridership is around 50,000 passengers daily (about 14.7 million per year in 2018). The system uses Alstom Citadis 302 trams, which are fully low-floor and made up of five cars. Each tram can carry about 200 passengers, with a maximum speed of 70 km/h, though service on Line 1 typically runs up to 50 km/h for safety.
A historic tram operated on Tenerife from 1901 to 1951, but the current tram system began today’s service in 2007. Construction for the modern tram started in 2004, and Line 1 opened on 2 June 2007. Line 2 followed on 30 May 2009. There have been plans to extend the network, including a future link to the airport and other areas, and there is interest in adding a third line along the coast.
