Ted Clark
Ted Clark, born Edward Austen Clark on 13 April 1937 in Balham, London, is a former English cricketer who played mainly for Middlesex. A right-handed middle-order batsman and left-arm medium-pace bowler, he debuted for Middlesex in 1959 against Cambridge University, scoring 25 and 100 not out. He quickly established himself, topping Middlesex’s batting averages in 1959 with 728 runs in 12 matches. Wisden praised him as a fine batsman with a good temperament.
After a back injury in 1960, he returned in 1961 to score 1335 runs and earned his county cap. In 1962 he hit 1154 runs, and in the last match of the season took 5 for 69 with his bowling. In 1963 his form dipped but he regained it in 1964, scoring 1454 runs and taking 19 wickets, including his best figures, 5 for 61 against Surrey. He continued to be productive in 1965 and 1966, with a highest score of 149 against Kent in 1966. He retired from regular county cricket after 1966 but played some first-class and List A games for Middlesex in 1968 and 1976. He is a member of the Middlesex Hall of Fame.
Clark also played for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). With MCC teams he toured Canada and the United States in 1967, East Africa in 1973–74, and Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand in 1981. He captained MCC teams to Bangladesh in 1976–77 and 1978–79—the first cricket teams to tour Bangladesh.
