Tasneem Qureishi is a fictional character on the TV series Homeland. She is an Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) officer from Pakistan who later becomes the ISI’s Director-General. The role is played by Indian actress Nimrat Kaur, who appears in season four (2014) and season eight (2020).

Season four introduces Tasneem as a mysterious and ruthless ISI agent who will do whatever she thinks is best for Pakistan. She becomes Carrie Mathison’s (the CIA’s) clever and dangerous nemesis, though Tasneem says she is acting in her country’s interests. Her schemes include blackmail, manipulating a key US informant, tampering with Carrie’s medication to trigger a breakdown, and delaying military help to Islamabad. She also passes information that helps the Taliban, including Haqqani, and uses those power plays to push Pakistan’s agenda while the US and CIA are weakened. Viewers came to hate and also admire her, recognizing that she is terrifyingly competent and driven by a strong sense of duty to her country.

In season eight, Tasneem reappears as the Director-General of the ISI, a position historically held by men. She is a formidable political force in Pakistan and often opposed to American policy, especially on Afghanistan peace talks. Yet she can ally with Saul Berenson, the US National Security Advisor, when their goals align. Tasneem tries to control the Taliban’s leadership and disrupt the peace process, Sometimes clashing with Saul, Haqqani, and others as she protects Pakistani interests. Her power is tested when Jalal, Haqqani’s chosen successor, grows into a major military force, challenging Tasneem’s control. She uses careful calculations and back-channel diplomacy to steer events, all while maintaining a reputation as one of Homeland’s most watchable villains.

Nimrat Kaur’s performance as Tasneem has been widely praised. Critics and fans called her a “love-to-hate” character and one of the season’s best additions. Kaur has said playing a villain was a new challenge for her, and she enjoyed bringing depth and dignity to Tasneem’s ruthlessness. Her work helped bring renewed energy to Homeland’s final season, and she earned nominations for ensemble and individual performance in awards conversations surrounding the show.

Tasneem’s character is notable for being a powerful, complex woman in a male-dominated world. Her actions are often morally ambiguous, framed as loyalty to her country rather than pure evil. The role required careful balancing of toughness with moments that reveal her personal side, including ties to her stepfather, Bunran Latif, and reflections on the costs of leadership in a tense regional conflict.
