Taiji (Mongol title)
Taiji (Mongolian: Тайж, 台吉) was a Mongol noble title from the 16th century. It comes from the Chinese word taizi, meaning "heir apparent." The title was first used for the sons and descendants of Batu-Möngke Dayan Khan (roughly 1480–1517) and is also known as Khong Tayji. After the 15th century, Mongols began using the shorter form Taiji, and Oirat princes also held the title at the same time. Taiji is not the same as taishi, which was given to non-royal nobles.
