Tafseer-e-Kabeer (Urdu: تفسير کبير, tafsīr-e-kabīr, "The Extensive Commentary") is a 10-volume Urdu exegesis of the Quran written by Mirza Bashir-ud-Din Mahmud Ahmad, the second Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, over about 20 years. The first volume was published in 1940 by Zia ul Islam Press in Qadian.

In the preface to the first volume, Ahmad argued for a modern, rigorous approach to Quranic interpretation. He praised classical commentators like Ibn Kathir and Zamakhshari but warned that they sometimes included weak or questionable narrations and relied too much on Jewish sources. He also criticized the idea of abrogation for disturbing the Quran’s clarity. He believed the Quran contains prophecies fulfilled up to his own time, using those fulfillments as evidence that the Quran is God’s word. He claimed to be divinely guided in understanding the meanings of verses and stressed the importance of the current order of the Surahs.

A distinctive feature of Tafseer-e-Kabeer is its view of the Quran as a coherent whole, with themes that connect across Surahs and verses. It offers an eschatological reading aligned with Ahmadi beliefs, applying many prophecies to contemporary times. The commentary also aims to answer objections from non-Muslim writers and to present Islam in a clear, argumentative form. It often engages with the work of Orientalists, but it emphasizes a linguistic, text-focused approach rather than relying heavily on traditional reports about revelation (asbab al-nuzul).

Each verse is treated in two parts: first, a range of translations from major Arabic lexicons and classical uses, and second, a detailed commentary. The work places less emphasis on the reasons for revelation and, instead, focuses on meaning and implications. It also references the advances of 19th- and early 20th-century science and social ideas to discuss practical Quranic teachings on morality, society, politics, and economics, and it includes comparisons with beliefs in other religions.

Tafseer-e-Kabeer is noted for its thorough notes, bibliography, and indices at the end of each volume. It was originally written in Urdu and has been translated into Arabic. An English five-volume edition by Malik Ghulam Farid draws heavily on Tafseer-e-Kabeer, though it is not a complete translation.

In summary, Tafseer-e-Kabeer is a major Ahmadi interpretation that aims to present a modern, coherent, and apologetic understanding of the Quran, emphasizing linguistic analysis, prophecy-based interpretations, and engagement with contemporary intellectual challenges.
