Swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics – Women's 800 metre freestyle

The women’s 800 metre freestyle at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was held at the Olympic Aquatic Centre on August 19 (heats) and August 20 (final). There were 31 swimmers from 26 countries. The winning time was 8:24.54.

- Bronze: Diana Munz (United States)

Shibata’s victory made her the first Asian swimmer to win Olympic gold in long-distance freestyle, with a winning margin of 0.42 seconds—the narrowest in this event at the Olympics as of 2023. Manaudou, who had won the 400 m freestyle, finished in 8:24.96 for silver. Munz finished in 8:26.61, edging out her teammate Kalyn Keller by 0.36 seconds for bronze.
