Sveta Gora
Sveta Gora, also known as Monte Santo di Gorizia in Italian, is a tiny settlement in western Slovenia, in the Municipality of Nova Gorica. It sits on Holy Mount above the Soča Valley, near the Banjšice Plateau, at about 681 meters above sea level.
In 1539 a shepherd named Urška Ferligoj reportedly had a vision from the Virgin Mary telling people to build a church there.
In May 1917, during World War I, Sveta Gora saw heavy fighting between Austrian and Italian forces. Along Skalnica Road there are old Austro-Hungarian dugouts that lead to the Franciscan monastery and the church at the top of Skalnica Hill.
Sveta Gora became its own settlement in 2006, separating from Solkan and Grgar. The area covers about 0.3 square kilometers, and the population was 14 people in 2013.
