Retour à Gorée
Retour à Gorée (Return to Gorée) is a 2007 musical documentary road movie. It was directed by Pierre-Yves Borgeaud, with a screenplay by Emmanuel Gétaz and Pierre-Yves Borgeaud. The film is produced by CAB Productions, Iris Productions, and Dreampixies. It stars Youssou N’Dour and Moncef Genoud.
The movie follows Youssou N’Dour as he retraces the paths created by slavery and the birth of jazz. His goal is to bring a jazz repertoire back to Africa and sing those tunes on Gorée Island, a place that symbolizes the slave trade. Moncef Genoud guides him on his journey, which takes him across the United States and Europe. With a group of top musicians, they give concerts, meet people, and hold discussions. The music is by Youssou N’Dour, Moncef Genoud, and Harmnoy Harmoneerss.
Cinematography is by Camille Cottagnoud, and editing by Daniel Gibel. It was distributed by Axiom Films in the UK and Ireland. The running time is 112 minutes. The film comes from Luxembourg, Senegal, and Swaziland.
