Cracroft, British Columbia
Cracroft is a small place at the east end of Forward Bay on the south side of West Cracroft Island, in the Johnstone Strait area of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada.
The Cracroft post office began in 1905 at the head of Port Harvey (about 50.57°N, 126.27°W). It was moved about half a mile east before 1928. In 1951, the post office was moved to Forward Bay and then closed later that year. By 1961, two people lived at the original Cracroft Bay post office site, and four people lived there in 1976.
The Cracroft Islands were named in 1861 by Captain Richards of HMS Plumper for Sophia Cracroft, the niece of explorer Sir John Franklin. Sophia joined Lady Jane Franklin on a round-the-world voyage, and they visited British Columbia during the Fraser Gold Rush of 1858. They stayed in the area and explored the coast in 1861 before returning to England. Other features named for Sophia Cracroft include the Sophia Islets off the southwest side of Cracroft Island and Cracroft Point. Across Johnstone Strait on Vancouver Island is the Franklin Range, named for Sir John and Lady Franklin.
Current locality coordinates: 50°31′35″N 126°22′50″W.
