Srboljub Stamenković
Srboljub Stamenković, known in the United States as Stan Stamenkovic, was a Yugoslav forward born on January 31, 1956, in Užice (then Titovo Užice), Serbia. He began his career with Sloboda Titovo Užice, then played for Red Star Belgrade from 1975 to 1981 before moving to the United States to play indoor soccer with the Memphis Americans (1981–1983) and the Baltimore Blast (1983–1988). He helped Baltimore win the MISL championship in 1984 and was the league’s top scorer that year with 34 goals. Stamenković was famed for his dribbling and passing, skills well suited to indoor soccer.
After returning to Yugoslavia, he started a pizza parlor. He attempted a comeback with the CISL’s San Jose Grizzlies in 1994, but injuries limited him to eight games. He scored 231 goals and had 311 assists in his career, totaling 542 points, and is regarded by many as one of the greatest MISL players.
Stamenković and his wife Vera had two children, Jovana and Nebojša. He died on January 28, 1996, in Užice after a head injury from a fall, just three days before his 40th birthday.
