1997 Indian vice presidential election

The 1997 Indian vice presidential election was held on 16 August 1997. Krishan Kant of Janata Dal won, defeating Surjit Singh Barnala of Shiromani Akali Dal (backed by the United Front). Kant received 441 votes (about 61.8%), while Barnala got 273 votes (about 38.2%). The vice presidency was vacant at the time because K. R. Narayanan had already become President after winning the presidential election. Krishan Kant became the tenth Vice President of India.
