Surge chamber
Surge chamber: In hydropower, a surge chamber is a large underground tank that holds water and lets its level rise and fall. This creates a free-surface area inside the waterway, helping to absorb pressure surges and stabilize flow to the turbines. It’s mainly used for long penstocks or tunnels when building a surge shaft isn’t feasible, serving as a compact way to protect equipment and improve plant stability.
