Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand
The Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand (SSSNZ) is the country’s largest Sikh organization. It oversees the day-to-day operations of gurdwaras, Sikh educational institutions, and sports facilities across New Zealand. It is a registered charity with about 550 financial members and around 2,000 non-financial members as of 2024. The headquarters are at the Takanini Gurdwara, and the organisation is often referred to by that location.
History and structure
- Formed on 6 June 1982 as the Auckland Branch of the Waikato-based New Zealand Sikh Society. The name was changed on 2 September 2012 to Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand.
- Abbreviation: SSSNZ.
- The Executive Committee is the main decision-making body, elected at an annual general meeting for two-year terms. The Rules and Regulation Committee acts as the disciplinary authority over the Executive Committee.
What the society does
- It manages and supports gurdwaras, educational institutions, and sports facilities.
- The society was originally established to purchase a property at Princes Street and Albert Street near Ōtāhuhu to build a gurdwara.
Recognition and impact
- In 2020, the society received the People’s Choice NZ Food Heroes Award for providing food and essential services during COVID-19 lockdowns. Parliament motions congratulating the Sikh community and the society were proposed by Hon Dr Megan Woods and Anahila Kanongata'a-Suisuiki.
