Sulphurous Lake
Sulphurous Lake is a freshwater lake in the Cariboo Region of British Columbia, near the Interlakes area and close to Deka Lake. The lake covers about 380 hectares (940 acres), is about 6.5 kilometres long, and sits at an elevation of 1,116 metres. It averages 15.4 metres deep and reaches a maximum depth of about 46.9 metres; there is one island.
The lake drains into Deka Lake. It has two boat launches—one for motor boats and one for paddle boats—and both are part of an official recreation site. The Sulphurous Lake Resort sits on the shore, and the Sulphurous Lake Volunteer Fire Department serves the north shore cabins and runs an annual fishing derby.
Most of the eastern area borders Rainbow/Q'iwentem Provincial Park. The lake is stocked with Rainbow Trout and Kokanee. For lake trout, the daily catch limit is one fish, and lake trout are released from October 1 to November 30.
There used to be a garbage dump north of the lake on Petty John Road; it’s still visible but is being reclaimed by nature. The lake got its name from two yellow swallow patches. The main boat launch used to be at an old sawmill.
