Sts. Constantine and Helen Serbian Orthodox Church
Saints Constantine and Helen Serbian Orthodox Church is an Eastern Orthodox church in Galveston, Texas. It is a parish in the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of New Gračanica and Midwestern America.
The eastern Orthodox community in Galveston began as the Saints Constantine and Helen parish in 1861. In the late 1800s, Serbs, Greeks, and Russians asked Tsar Nicholas II for a church. The Tsar approved, construction began in 1895, and the building was completed in 1896, with consecration on June 3, 1896. Nicholas II personally donated icons for the iconostasis, a gospel book, and sacred vessels. The first priest was Archimandrite Theoclitos Triantafilides. Early services were held in Greek, Russian, and Serbian. In 1933, the Greek members formed a daughter parish under the Greek Orthodox Church, named Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church.
This church was the first Serbian Orthodox church in Texas and the oldest Orthodox parish in the state, and it is the second oldest Serbian Orthodox church in the United States. A Galveston native, Metropolitan Christopher Kovacevich of the Libertyville-Chicago Metropolia, grew up here and later returned to preside at weddings and baptisms.
