String Trios (Schubert)
Franz Schubert wrote three string trios, all in B-flat major. The first, D 111A, from 1814, survives only as a short fragment—just a few bars of an Allegro. This fragment has been printed in modern editions such as the New Schubert Edition; parts of it had earlier appearances in the Alte Gesamt-Ausgabe (1890) and were reissued by Dover in 1965. The second trio, D 471, written in 1816, has a completed first movement but an incomplete second movement. The last trio, D 581, completed in 1817, has four movements and exists in two versions. D 581 was published in the Alte Gesamt-Ausgabe in 1897 as No. 5 in Serie XXI: Supplement, Volume 1, and both versions appeared in Series VI, Volume 6 of the New Schubert Edition in 1981.
