Punk in Sweden

Punk rock and hardcore punk have shaped a punk scene in Sweden since the 1970s. Punk arrived in spring 1977 with a one-day festival that drew bands like Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones, and Television. Ebba Grön became the most famous Swedish punk band, followed by KSMB. Other notable groups included Asta Kask, Kriminella Gitarrer, Tant Strul, Pink Champagne, The Pain, and Göteborg Sound.

In the 1980s, hardcore punk, kängpunk, and raw punk grew in popularity. Mob 47 and Anti Cimex were the most influential Swedish bands and inspired many others abroad. Other important bands were Moderat Likvidation, Black Uniforms, Totalitär, Headcleaners, Homy Hogs, and Avskum. Sweden also developed a subgenre called trallpunk, which came from 80s melodic and raw punk and often had catchy melodies, fast drums, and left-wing lyrics with folk-like touches. Notable trallpunk bands include De Lyckliga Kompisarna, Strebers, Dia Psalma, Charta 77, Coca Carola, Räserbajs, Köttgrottorna, and Radioaktiva Räker. Later, some trallpunk bands mixed in skatepunk influences, like Skumdum.

Early Swedish punks clashed with Raggarna, a working-class car-loving scene that drank and listened to rockabilly. This conflict is reflected in songs by bands such as Rude Kids and P-Nissarna. Early punk venues included Oasen in Rågsved, Ultrahuset in Haninge, and Vita huset in Täby. Today, venues like Kafé 44 in Stockholm and Verket in Umeå host a lot of punk shows.

Punk in Sweden connected with the growing hardcore scene in the north during the 1990s, led by bands like Refused from Umeå and Raised Fist from Luleå. Refused stayed close to punk roots but also stretched into post-hardcore. The 1990s also saw crust punk bands such as Driller Killer, Skitsystem, Wolfbrigade, and Disfear.

In the 2000s, many of the early Swedish punk bands reunited and released new material. Some northern bands started adding more pop influences while keeping punk’s energy. Examples include Invasionen, which features Dennis Lyxzén from Refused, and Knugen Faller, featuring Inge Johansson from Totalt jävla mörker.
