Stormy Weather (Lena Horne album)
Stormy Weather is a studio album by Lena Horne, released by RCA Victor in September 1957. It was her third studio album and contains 11 pop-style tracks, including a new version of the title song. The album was recorded at Webster Hall in New York City, produced by E.O. Walker, with arrangements conducted by Lennie Hayton, Horne’s husband at the time. The original LP had six tracks on side A and five on side B.
In 2002, RCA reissued Stormy Weather on CD with ten extra tracks, including an alternate version of the title song. The reissue keeps the original track listing and adds the bonus material afterward.
Reception was positive: Billboard called it a powerful package with Horne delivering a smart, sexy performance; the Ottawa Citizen praised it as one of RCA’s impressive fall releases. AllMusic’s Scott Yanow gave it 4.5/5 stars, noting Horne is in top form and recommending it to fans.
Background: Horne began as an MGM film actress and RCA artist in the 1940s, faced a blacklist, returned to RCA in 1954, and soon released more LPs, including this one.
