Steve Marchant
Steve Marchant is a fictional Emmerdale character played by Paul Opacic, who appeared from 1996 to 1999. He first arrives in the village as a former university friend of Rachel Hughes, moving to Emmerdale to escape city life and reconnect with her. He is a confident, sharp-witted businessman who often uses people to get what he wants.
Steve dates Rachel after her marriage to Chris Tate ends and becomes involved with the Tate family in business. He later marries Kim Tate, drawn by both romance and the chance to boost his own status and wealth.
Financial trouble at Kim’s business leads Steve to a desperate plan: steal a horse to raise money. The plan goes wrong when he hits Kathy Bates with his car, leaving her seriously injured, and then he tries to kill her by smothering her. Kim learns of Steve’s actions and their relationship begins to unravel as they both try to protect themselves.
Feeling betrayed, Steve teams up with Chris to bring Kim down. In court, Steve pleads guilty to horse theft and obtaining money by deception, while Kim pleads not guilty to those charges and to attempted murder. The jury finds Kim guilty of theft and deception and Steve guilty of attempted murder. Steve is sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Kim flees the village during the trial and is later found guilty on the other charges.
Steve Marchant is remembered as one of Emmerdale’s notable residents, a stylish but ruthless character who got caught up in Kim Tate’s world of power and deceit.
