1995 WLAF season
1995 WLAF season
The 1995 World League of American Football was the league’s third season and the first entirely with six European teams. After a two-year break, the WLAF dropped its North American teams and kept three existing European clubs—Frankfurt Galaxy, London Monarchs, and Barcelona Dragons—while adding three new ones: Rhein Fire, Scottish Claymores, and Amsterdam Admirals.
The season featured a big change in teams and leadership. The Scottish Claymores began preseason strong, but fired head coach Larry Kuharich five days before the season started because his coaching style didn’t fit the team. Rhein Fire made the top pick in the draft, selecting Shaumbe Wright-Fair.
Frankfurt’s path to the World Bowl included a notable 27–7 win over London on May 15. The Claymores, after their strong preseason, finished the year with a 2–8 record, including a Week 6 overtime loss to Rhein Fire, which dashed their hopes of reaching the title game.
World Bowl '95 took place on June 17, 1995, at Amsterdam’s Olympisch Stadion. The Frankfurt Galaxy defeated the Amsterdam Admirals 26–22 to win their first World Bowl title. The game drew 23,847 fans. Galaxy quarterback Paul Justin earned MVP honors, throwing 18 of 36 for 308 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
In the regular season, the Admirals had the better record, going 9–1 in the league’s European format, while the Galaxy were 6–4. Earlier meetings between the teams had the Admirals winning 14–12 in Amsterdam, and Frankfurt taking the rematch 28–13 in Frankfurt.
