Stener Johannes Stenersen
Stener Johannes Stenersen (15 July 1835 – 7 July 1904) was a Norwegian veterinarian who became a leading expert on breeding, especially horses, in Norway. He was born in Elverum, Hedmark, to priest Gabriel Hofgaard Stenersen and Anne Birgitte Irgens, and was the nephew of theologian Stener Johannes Stenersen. After finishing Christiania Cathedral School, he studied at the Royal Veterinary College of Copenhagen from 1853 to 1857.
He then worked as a county veterinarian in Hedmark, in Østerdalen (1857–1860) and Hedmarken (1860–1863). In July 1862 he married Helga Hermana Heltberg, and they had a son, Gudmund Stenersen, who later became a painter. In May 1883 he was hired as state agronomist in Western Norway, focusing on stockbreeding. He worked in Voss for a year and then in Stavanger, becoming a national expert on breeding, especially horses. In 1888 he published Vestlandshesten (Fjordhesten), the first monograph on the Fjord horse of western Norway. He also wrote Alderen for Hestens Kastration (1876), which earned him the Royal Veterinary College Gold Medal. He died in Stavanger in 1904.
