St. Hakob-Hayrapet Church (Shurud)
St. Hakob-Hayrapet Church was an Armenian church in the village of Shurud, in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region. It was founded in the 12th century and renovated in the mid-17th century. The church had a cruciform basilica plan with a tall dome. Inside there was a nave with two aisles, a large apse, and two vestries. The door was decorated with bands of relief sculpture. A pillared western porch was destroyed by an earthquake in 1841. Armenian inscriptions appeared on the interior, on the western façade, and on the exterior of the dome, and wall paintings added in the 1680s by Naghash Hovnatan adorned the dome. The church was destroyed sometime between 1997 and June 15, 2006, as documented by Caucasus Heritage Watch.
