Nyköpingsån
Nyköpingsån is a river in Sweden, mainly in Södermanland County. It is about 150 kilometers long and drains around 3,600 square kilometers. The river’s average flow is about 23 cubic meters per second. It ends in the Baltic Sea at Nyköping, the largest town along the river.
The highest source is the small lake Svartsjön in Hallsberg Municipality, Örebro County, at 187 meters above sea level. The river has other sources too, including Norra Dovrasjön and lakes Tisaren and Tisnaren in Östergötland, near Simonstorp in Norrköping Municipality. This makes Nyköpingsån a tri-county river.
Along its course the river drains several large interior lakes, especially Båven and Yngaren. The village of Vrena, northwest of Nyköping, is surrounded by lakes and is connected to the river system by a small river through the area.
Nyköpingsån is one of two rivers that flow into Nyköping’s harbour; the other is Kilaån.
Most of the river and its lakes are navigable for small boats, but there are hydroelectric waterfalls in Nyköping that block some sections. Some passages between lakes are narrow.
