St George the Conqueror Chapel Mausoleum
St George the Conqueror Chapel Mausoleum is a Bulgarian Orthodox chapel and war memorial in Pleven, Bulgaria. Built from 1903 to 1907 in Neo-Byzantine style by architect Pencho Koychev after winning a 1903 competition, it honors Russian and Romanian soldiers who died for Bulgaria’s liberation during the Siege of Pleven in 1877. The remains of many soldiers are kept in the mausoleum, and the interior icons were painted by Bulgarian artists. Named after Saint George, the patron saint of soldiers, the chapel is also shown in Pleven’s coat of arms. It stands on Vazrazhdane Square.
