Suraj Singh Shakya
Suraj Singh Shakya is an Indian politician from Uttar Pradesh. He served as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for four terms, representing the Sakit constituency in Etah district. He was first elected in 1991 and re-elected in 1993, then again from 2002 to 2007 and from 2007 to 2012.
He was the Minister of State for Cooperatives in the Uttar Pradesh government from 1991 to 1992. In 2003, he served as a minister in Mulayam Singh Yadav’s government.
Shakya has been part of two major parties. He started with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and later joined the Samajwadi Party (SP). In 2019, he contested the Lok Sabha election with the Jan Adhikar Party but lost to Rajveer Singh.
Personal life and background:
- Born on 2 January 1939 in Khiria Patti village, Etah district. His father was Pyare Lal Shakya.
- He is married to Nirmala Shakya since 20 May 1964, and they have three sons and a daughter.
- He holds master’s degrees in Arts and Commerce, studied law, and has a diploma in cooperation.
- He worked as a Senior Auditor in the Uttar Pradesh Cooperative Audit Organization from 1961 to 1985.
- He founded the Little Angels School in Agra.
- He identifies as belonging to the Shakya caste, an Other Backward Class.
- He participated in the Ram Janmbhoomi movement and was imprisoned twice, in Mainpuri and Delhi.
