Springfield Falcons
Springfield Falcons were an American Hockey League (AHL) team based in Springfield, Massachusetts, at the MassMutual Center, from 1994 to 2016. They started after the old Springfield Indians moved away, and the new club was named the Falcons after a local peregrine falcon symbol. Over the years they were the farm team for several NHL clubs, including the Hartford Whalers, Winnipeg Jets (later Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes), Tampa Bay Lightning, Edmonton Oilers, and Columbus Blue Jackets, before finishing with the Arizona Coyotes.
The Falcons won four division titles (1995–96, 1997–98, 2012–13, 2013–14) and made the Calder Cup playoffs several times, including a breakthrough run in 2013 that ended a long drought. The 2013–14 team set a franchise record with 47 wins and 100 points. Notable players who wore the Falcons uniform include Daniel Briere, Manny Legace, Nikolai Khabibulin, and Jonathan Marchessault. Bruce Landon served as general manager and co-owner from the team's start until 2014.
In 2016, the franchise was purchased by the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes and relocated to Tucson, Arizona to become the Tucson Roadrunners. The Portland Pirates, the Falcons’ affiliate in nearby Maine, moved to Springfield to become the Springfield Thunderbirds.
