SportsNation (website)
SportsNation is a feature section on ESPN.com, billed as “Where America’s Sports Fans Meet.” It offers daily shows and fantasy analysis during the sports season. The Show originally included The Morning Quickie with Dan Shanoff until September 2006, and the number of shows per sport varied with the season. After The Morning Buzz, fantasy analysis is provided by ESPN analysts such as Christopher Harris, Matthew Berry, Stephania Bell, Scott Engel, AJ Mass, Nate Ravitz, Eric Karabell, and Tristan Cockcroft. On Monday Night Football, Buzz used to chat, but those chats were later discontinued.
The Morning Buzz was the first regular chat, held every weekday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. ET, followed by chats with other ESPN personalities, celebrities, and athletes. It covered current sports news, pop culture, and even the chatter’s lunch choices. The most infamous participant was Hurricane Jeff from Byesville, Ohio, who would reintroduce himself at the start of posts and was eventually banned for trying to replace the Week in Review with the Weekly Whisper. The Morning Buzz inspired a Facebook page with awards and a Hall of Fame for chatters. Jokes about public figures and lunchtime rituals were common, and when Buzz was off, Buzzette filled in. On September 23, 2011, Buzz announced that The Morning Buzz would end the following Friday, September 30, 2011, and that chat times would be adjusted afterward. The final Morning Buzz chat was held on September 30, 2011, ending its four-year run.
The Week in Review (WIR) is a long weekly post written by Robert in Raleigh, NC, published every Friday around 10:50 a.m. It recaps the week’s chat topics in a story-like format that ties them together. WIR began after a chat user asked what happened during a missed week; Robert posted in a narrative style, and the feature became a regular. In late 2007 Robert left the Morning Buzz to focus on work, and WIR paused briefly; he returned on February 29, 2008, with a new WIR. An example from February 29, 2008 described humorous, fictional daily events and kept the tradition going.
The Morning Buzz ultimately ended on September 30, 2011, marking the end of a notable era for SportsNation.
