Sports Night is an American comedy-drama about a fictional late-night sports news show called Sports Night. Created by Aaron Sorkin, the series stars Robert Guillaume as Isaac Jaffe, Felicity Huffman as Dana Whitaker, Peter Krause as Casey McCall, Josh Charles as Dan Rydell, Sabrina Lloyd as Natalie Hurley, and Joshua Malina as Jeremy Goodwin. It aired on ABC for two seasons, from September 22, 1998, to May 16, 2000, running 45 episodes in total.

The show follows the friendships, challenges, and ethical dilemmas the team faces while trying to produce a good program under constant network pressure. It blends humor with workplace drama and is known for its fast, witty dialogue and the frequent “walk and talk” scenes, where characters talk while moving between locations. Initially, a laugh track was used, but it was dropped during the second season.

Set in New York City at the fictional Continental Sports Channel, the program is broadcast live from 11 pm to midnight and rebroadcast the next morning. The network faces money troubles, and the show often portrays the tough competition with ESPN and other sports outlets. The series is a semi-fictional look at how sports news shows operate, with parallels to real figures like Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann. Some connections to real-life personalities like Craig Kilborn have been noted.

Season 2 expands the world with Anthony’s, a local bar where characters gather off the air. Actor Robert Guillaume’s stroke in real life was folded into the story arc. Despite critical praise, Sports Night struggled to find a large audience and was canceled after two seasons. Creator Aaron Sorkin chose not to move the show to another network so he could focus on The West Wing.

Home media releases include a Region 1 DVD set in 2002, a 10th Anniversary Edition in 2008 with bonus features, and a 2010 release of Season One on DVD. The series has been recognized by critics for its sharp writing and has appeared on lists noting shows canceled too soon and strong two-season runs.
