Spatalla parilis
Spatalla parilis, the spike spoon, is a flowering shrub in the Proteaceae family and a part of the fynbos. It is native to the Western Cape of South Africa. The plant grows upright to about 1.5 meters tall and flowers from September to December.
It dies in a fire, but its seeds survive to recolonize the area. The species is bisexual and pollinated by insects. About two months after flowering, the ripe seeds fall to the ground and are spread by ants.
Spatalla parilis occurs on cool, southern slopes at elevations of 300–1,550 meters, in areas including the Hottentots Holland Mountains, the Riviersonderend Mountains, and the Langeberg near Garcia's Pass.
Conservation status: Near Threatened (IUCN 3.1).
