Space Empires 4X is a space-themed strategy board wargame for 2–4 players, designed by Jim Krohn and published by GMT Games in 2011. It belongs to the 4X genre: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate.

In the game, players explore a hex map, colonize worlds, build fleets, and research technologies that let them design new ships or upgrade existing ones. Ships are represented by cardboard chits, and the map size, victory conditions, and starting resources depend on the number of players and the chosen scenario.

There are seven two-player scenarios and scenarios for larger groups, plus four single-player scenarios with two AI factions. Some scenarios support team play, but outside those teams players generally do not cooperate or trade; fleets from different teams fight when they meet.

Combat is resolved with dice, and most technologies boost combat effectiveness. A fog-of-war mechanic means you rarely know exactly what your opponents have.

Reception has been positive. In 2013, Deseret News listed Space Empires 4X among its Top 5 games. Spieletest praised its strategy, simple rules, engagement, and solo variants, though it criticized component quality. Since 2012, it has consistently ranked in the top 50 war games on BoardGameGeek.

The game was nominated for the 2011 Golden Geek Best Wargame award and won the Charles S. Roberts Award for Best Science-Fiction or Fantasy Board Wargame. It has three expansions: Close Encounters (2012), Replicators (2018), and All Good Things (2025).
