Sotenäs Municipality

Sotenäs kommun is in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. The seat is the town of Kungshamn, where about 3,500 people live.

The present municipality was created in 1974 by merging smaller units, and the name comes from the old Sotenäs Hundred.

Area and nature: The municipality covers 684.37 square kilometers in total, of which 138.21 km2 is land and 546.16 km2 is water. This area includes many coastlines and islands.

Population: About 9,069 people live here (as of June 30, 2025). The main towns are Kungshamn and nearby villages.

History and culture: Bohuslän has ancient remains dating back to around 6000 BC, including dolmens and rock carvings. The name Sotenäs comes from the historical Sotenäs Hundred. In the 16th century, herring fishing became an important industry. On the island Malmön, quarrying began in the 19th century and lasted until the 1930s.

Coat of arms: Granted in 1977, it shows a halibut, reflecting the region’s fishing heritage.
