Cal State Monterey Bay Otters

Cal State Monterey Bay Otters are the athletic teams for California State University, Monterey Bay in Seaside, California. They compete in NCAA Division II, primarily in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA); women’s water polo plays in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA).

The Otters began in 1996 in the NAIA’s California Pacific Conference and joined NCAA Division II in 2004, becoming full members in 2005. They field 14 varsity teams: men’s baseball, basketball, cross country, golf and soccer; women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, track and field, volleyball and water polo; plus a coed sailing team.

Their home venues include The Kelp Bed, the basketball/volleyball arena inside the Otter Sports Center, and Cardinale Stadium for soccer (opened in 2022 in partnership with Monterey Bay FC). The CSUMB Aquatic Center is used for swimming events. The mascot is Monte Rey Otter and the school colors are blue and gold.

CSUMB has won one NCAA Division II team championship (men’s golf, 2011) and has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 23 times across six sports.
