History of AIK Fotboll (short version)

AIK Fotboll is a Swedish football club from Stockholm, founded in 1891 by Isidor Behrens. The full name Allmänna Idrottsklubben means “The General Sports Club,” chosen to show that the club was open to everyone and that athletics was the main focus.

In its early days AIK claimed the Swedish Championship in 1900 and 1901 and competed in Stockholm leagues. They joined Allsvenskan, Sweden’s top division, in 1924 and won their first Allsvenskan titles in 1932 and 1937. That same year the club moved to the new Råsunda Stadium in Solna. From the 1940s to the early 1990s AIK had a mix of successes and setbacks, including several relegations and cup runs.

The club’s fortunes improved in the early 1990s. AIK were Swedish champions again in 1992, as the league system was restructured in 1993. They also had European campaigns, including the Cup Winners’ Cup, and in 1999 reached the Champions League group stages, a landmark for a Stockholm club.

The 2000s were challenging, and AIK were relegated in 2004. They bounced back and, in 2009, won the league and the Svenska Cupen under coach Rikard Norling, a rare double that remains a highlight of the modern era.

From 2010 onward, AIK stayed competitive in Sweden and in Europe. Andreas Alm led the team for several seasons, with strong league finishes. In 2016, Norling returned and AIK finished a close second in the league. A new generation of players emerged, including young star Alexander Isak, who moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2017. AIK then enjoyed a resurgence, winning the Swedish Championship again in 2018 and adding domestic cup successes that year. The following seasons saw continued competitiveness, with 2019 finishing high and 2020 bringing changes as players left and new signings arrived.

AIK’s history is defined by resilience, loyal fans, and intense rivalries—especially the Stockholm derby against Djurgårdens IF—marking its lasting presence at the top of Swedish football.
