Siwan district is in the western part of Bihar, India. The district headquarters is Siwan town, and it is part of the Saran division since 1972. The district covers about 2,219 square kilometres.

As of the 2011 census, Siwan has a population of about 3.33 million people (about 1.68 million men and 1.66 million women). The literacy rate is around 69.5%, and the sex ratio is 988 females for every 1,000 males. About 5% of people live in urban areas, and 16.6% are aged 0–6 years. The district is mainly Bhojpuri-speaking (about 93%), with Urdu and Hindi also spoken.

Administratively, Siwan is divided into 2 sub-divisions, 19 blocks, 4 municipalities, and 293 gram panchayats (village councils).

Siwan has a rich history and legend. The Don village in the Darauli block is believed to be the site of the ancient Dronacharya Gurukul mentioned in the Mahabharata. The area is tied to ancient kingdoms and has played roles in India’s history, including contributions to the independence movement.
