Shire of Toombul: A short history

The Shire of Toombul was a local government area in northern Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It existed from 1883 until 1925.

HOW IT BEGAN
- The area started as part of the Nundah Division, created in 1879.
- On November 3, 1883, the Toombul Division was separated from Nundah Division to form its own local government.
- In 1890, the Hamilton Division was split off from Toombul.
- On March 31, 1903, the Local Authorities Act 1902 replaced divisions with shires and towns, so Toombul Division became the Shire of Toombul.

AMALGAMATION
- The Shire of Toombul was merged into the City of Brisbane on October 1, 1925, becoming part of Brisbane’s northern suburbs.

TOOMBUL SHIRE HALL
- When the shire began, its offices were at Breakfast Creek; after the Hamilton split, Toombul rented premises in Nundah (Boyd Street).
- The Shire Hall was built in 1891 at 1141 Sandgate Road, Nundah. It combined offices in front with a public hall at the rear.
- After amalgamation in 1925, the hall was used by the Brisbane City Council for public health offices and as a works depot, with the hall available for community meetings.
- During World War II, the building housed Civil Defence and ambulance activities; the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade provided first aid training there.
- A major renovation in 1987–88 reopened the building for community use. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992.
- The former hall remains a landmark of Toombul’s local history.

MEMORIAL
- The Shire of Toombul War Memorial was dedicated on November 12, 1921, by the Governor of Queensland, Matthew Nathan.
- It commemorates residents who served in World War I and stands in Nundah Memorial Park (then Buckland Park).

CHAIRMEN
- The Shire was led by a series of chairmen from its beginning in 1883. Notable early and later leaders include John Francis Buckland (1883–1885) and James Francis Maxwell (1904–1905), who later became Brisbane mayor. The final chairmen were among those who served up to amalgamation in 1925.

EXTRA CONTEXT
- The Shire covered the northern Brisbane area around Toombul, with its hall in Nundah and earlier offices at Breakfast Creek.
- The Shire’s history reflects the growth and changes in local government in Queensland, culminating in its incorporation into Brisbane in 1925.
